I have Hoya 58mm Pro-1 Super Hmc Multi-Coated UV Filter?
The filter is still in its original packaging. I was told that such filter is applicable to cameras using film, not for Digital Cameras which has built in stuff to block out uv? Now, I am considering selling it if it is something which I do not need & I can buy something else. I have a 50mm 1.4 canon prime lens.
This is a good Quality Filter, the whole issue of 'protection' filters is a contentious one.
I have never used them in over 50 years as a pro, my cameras have been down coal mines in steel works and other hazardous environments with no problems, the only time I would even consider using them is with wind blown sand.
The idea that a thin piece of glass offers mechanical protection is to me ludicrous, you'll get better protection from a decent Lens Hood particularly the rubber ones.
I've seen problems with front/rear focussing, flare, though the coating on this one helps, adding glass to the front of a lens no matter how good can only make the optics worse and can never improve them.
The original idea with UV filters was for the fogging you can get with film in high UV areas such as the top of mountains or on a beach on a bright summers day, in the Artic/Antartic. Digital sensors are not very sensitive to UV so don't need them for this reason.
My advice would be to sell and get something more useful.

Hoya 77mm HMC UV-IR Digital Multi-Coated Slim Frame Glass Filter This specialized Hoya 77mm HMC UV-IR Multi-Coated Filter has the ability to cut out both UV rays below 390nm and IR rays above 700nm leaving just the light rays in the visible spectrum passing through the filters and into the camera.
